If you don’t sleep – you’re not healthy. It’s as simple as that. As Americans, we tend to wear our lack of sleep as a badge of honor. I think it’s high time we start honoring our body by giving it the rest it needs. Millions of people in this great nation suffer from sleep disorders. A simple Google keyword search will vouch that fact.
As a huge believer in both integrative and functional medicine, I decided to write this article with the intention to at least show you there are options outside of the pharmaceutical route to sleep. Just because a pill forces your body into a suspended state, does not mean that it is regenerating and healing the way your Creator intended it to while sleeping.
At Pink Apothecary, our best selling roll-on is Sleep Sweet. It helps you, your mind, and your body relax so you are able to drift off to sleep naturally. This is a great option for anyone having a hard time shutting down in the evening. It’s also a healthy option for new parents.
Many people ask why they can’t sleep. It’s pretty simple, and complex, all at once. If your testosterone, estrogen or progesterone levels are too low then your major hormones are likely too high. These major hormonal players include: thyroid, adrenals, cortisol, and insulin. If you think about that list for just a minute, you’ll quickly see a correlation between weight gain and lack of sleep. That should be a good motivator, right?
If you are suffering from insomnia then get your hormones checked! It is one of the sweetest things you can do for yourself! Standard medical training will not suffice here. Consider looking for physicians board certified in anti-aging medicine, functional medicine or integrative medicine. Suzanne Somers has published her own library of books on the subjects of health and hormones. Her approach is to writing on these subjects is ingenious; she interviews the world’s brightest physicians who are successfully changing the medical paradigm you currently know. This gives you and I access to information only her money can buy. I think you’ll find her books easy-to-read and motivating!
In the mean time, here are some natural sleep aids to consider:
There are also some behavioral changes will positively affect your sleep. First, light keeps your cortisol levels high. If you have high cortisol levels then sleep is simply not possible. You’re going to hate me for saying this, but turn off your computer and mobile devices several hours before bed. There is science behind this – research. Your body needs to sleep in the dark.
Change your schedule so you can be in bed 2-3 hours before midnight. This is essential for your health. Your body requires 3 and a half hours of melatonin secretion before it will begin to produce a hormone called prolactin. Prolactin comes from your pituitary gland, and it has been discovered that 6 hours of prolactin secretion is necessary for your body to maintain immune function. If you go to bed at midnight and wake up for work at 6am then your body was not given enough hours to heal. This leaves you with a compromised immune system set-up for disease, a thick waste, carb cravings, irritability and accelerated aging. You truly do need your beauty sleep!
